燈裡的油,就像我們的妄想;
照亮眾生,是布施;
燈火清淨,是持戒;
黑夜仍然發光,是忍辱;
油不斷燃燒,是精進;
風吹不動,是禪定;
Lighting a lamp before the Buddha is actually a form of practice.
Many people feel troubled when they meditate or practice,
because their minds are full of wandering thoughts.
But Buddhism teaches us something different —
we don’t need to fear these thoughts.
Think about an oil lamp.
The oil in the lamp
is like our wandering thoughts.
And the light of the lamp
is like wisdom.
When the lamp is lit,
the oil is gradually burned away.
In the same way,
our thoughts can be transformed
into the light of wisdom.
In fact, a single lamp contains the practice of the Six Perfections.
Lighting the darkness for others
is Generosity.
Keeping the flame pure
is Discipline.
Shining through the long night
is Patience.
The constant burning of oil
is Diligence.
Remaining steady even in stillness
is Meditative Concentration.
And the moment-to-moment arising and fading of light
reveals Wisdom.
So the lamp before the Buddha
is not just an offering.
It reminds us of something deeper:
Transform every wandering thought
into the light of wisdom.
